The GATERS Project is at TRA2022 (14-17 November 2022)

TRA, the Transport Research Arena, is the largest European research and technology conference on transport and mobility. TRA is the foremost European transport event that covers all transport modes and all aspects of mobility. In November 2022, TRA took place in Lisbon, Portugal. Themed "Moving together – reimagining mobility worldwide", TRA2022 brought together experts from around the world to discuss the newest innovations and future of mobility and transport, building also on the Portuguese historical legacy and links to overseas transport professionals. Through the development of innovative solutions, TRA Lisbon 2022 aimed for more efficient, safer, carbon-free, inclusive, and sustainable transport in all its modes.

In TRA 2022, the GATERS project partners led by the coordinator (Strathclyde University) presented a technical paper entitled "The GATERS Project – An Innovative way of retrofitting ships for greener and safer operations".

Also, GATERS had the privilege of being displayed at the booth of the EC’s showpiece stand and the Waterborne stand with an approximately a 1/3 scale model of the Gate Rudder System by the members of the GATERS project including the university of Strathclyde (the coordinator), TWI and Glafcos. The scaled gate rudder model represented the first retrofit gate rudder system designed and manufactured to be installed on a 90m coastal cargo ship for the first time to demonstrate its benefits in April 2023 in Turkey.

Last but not the least, GATERS was also privileged by winning the TRAVISION2022 Senior Research Award in the Waterborne mode based on the project coordinator Prof Mehmet Atlar’s entry entitled “An innovative way of retrofitting ships for greener and safer operations”. The award was presented at TRA2022 Gala Dinner by the Director of the EC Clean Planet DGRI on 15 November 2022 in Lisbon, Portugal.
